1962

Church services wre conducted at the Evangelical United Brethran Church in Helvey, the church's parsonage and garage were to be auctioned.(2)
Frank Gaughenbaugh bought the double-fronted building at the south end of the building of the east side of square, for a wallpaper and paint store in the north half. The south half was occupied the Lindersmith drugstore. Built some 120 years ago by Col. Thomas Harbine, had been the site of the George E. Jenkins dry goods store, and Jenkins-Crooks Co., then Safeway, and Hergott and Stull appliance store.(2)
Coast to Coast store opens at 524 E. St. by Lavern Young.(2)
6,200 persons received the Sabin oral vaccine against polo.(2)
Jefferson YMCA said 568 adults and children had registered for water safety classes at the Fairbury pool. (2)
Work begins on the Jefferson County Memorial Hospital building in Fairbury. (2)
Charles E. Churchill becomes the official postmaster of the Fairbury Post Office. (2)
Signs posted at Crystal Springs, Fairbury, No Bow & Arrows in the Park. Needed after fisherman failed to remove carp they had shot. (2)
Jefferson County Civil Defense Director said the planning of public shelters from radiation is complete, construction pending. (2)
Fairbury Pipe & Supply Co. opened a branch in McCook. (2)
Alexandria became Lincoln Telephone Co.'s fourth exchange to use dial phone system. (2)
Steele City's water is declared unfit for human comsumption by the State Health Department. Considering how to proceed. (2)
New trash disposal units are being installed around the square, Fairbury. Each corner and in front of the Hested store. (2)
Oral polio vaccine clinic to be held July 1 at the Elks Club.(2)
The entire third floor of the Mary-Etta Hotel, at the corner of Fourth and F streets was being air-conditioned.(2)
Brackle's B Street Market completed an expansion. The original store a few feet north of the present site (B st between 10th & 11th) opened in 1932.(2)

1963

Storms swept the Alexandria Daykin-Gladstone area and damaged numerous farm buildings.

A lightening bolt killed a farmer living aobut four miles east of Daykin while he was after his cows in the pasture. A series of small twisters were part of the storm.

The Red Cross served a lunch for volunteers who came from other neightborhoods to aid with the clean-up.(2)

Postmaster Charles Churchill announced that the zip code for Fairbury would be 68352.(2)

The Reynolds school district voted to discontinue the high school but to continue elementary.

Endicott patrons voted to continue their high school.

The Fairbury Insurance Association presented a new piano to the nursing wing of the Jefferson Memoral Hospital. H.B. Boyden vice president. Gary Bricker administrator.

1964

O.C. Brickell retired after 43 years as Fairbury Dealer for Chevrolet, succeeded by his son-in-law George C. Newton.

Nebraska Department of Roads considering making Highway 136, (14th st) a four lane from K st. west to the viaduct. (Fairbury)
