Jenkins
Mills was founded in by
D.C. Jenkins in
1867
A store, hotel, postoffice and blacksmith shop were the first businesses.
D.C Jenkins owned the sawmill and gristmill.
H.D. Merrill owned the General Store.
A school was located near the mill.
In 1871 most of the town moved to Steele
City, with the coming of the railroad.
Freeport
Jas. Frazier and others started the town in 1868 on the west side of the river.
10 houses were built.
Businesses included hotel, blacksmith shop, carpenter shop.
A printing office of the
"Western Sun"
After the flood of 1869 most buildings
were moved to Jenkins Mills.
